Now, this blog post is for those who love to travel, just like me. As we approach the end of #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek2018 I have been inspired to do a blog post on travelling as this is one of the ways I look after my mental health. And, of course, because many of you have been asking me to ‘teach you’ further to my recent travels.
Many of us like to work, work, work & fail to take a break, neglecting our mental health. We all have different ways of taking care of ourselves mentally. As well as praying, travelling helps me to take a mental break.
The theme for this year is stress! Below are a few key tips to note for less stress when travelling! I would also love to hear some tips from you guys, so feel free to share in the comment box below.
1) Explore / try something new
The first way to get the most out of travelling is to actually do things. You will be surprised at the amount of people who go on holiday and stay indoors all day. Do something new, explore the country and create some amazing memories.
2) Go with people you genuinely want to travel with…
Who you go on holiday with can make such a difference to your trip. There are some holidays that you go on that regardless of the place, as long as you are with your ‘girls’ or the ‘lads’ you know you will enjoy. Surround yourself with positive energy and stay away from anything that may ruin your holiday. It is also key to go with friends who have similar interests & a similar mindset or picking activities you all enjoy may prove difficult!
3) Plan in advance…
Planning is so key, yes even when travelling. Planning in advance is so important and avoids unnecessary stress. There are many ways you can check the key attractions near your accommodation e.g. Google or the website for your accommodation (if you’re staying at an hotel, resort or apartment etc…). Some of the hotels and resorts also hold activities, so this is something you can also look into. You could also be strategic when booking holidays i.e. during a bank holiday to save you some annual leave.
4) Check the weather
One thing I always check before travelling is the weather (via Accuweather) but so many people fail to do this. It won’t be much of a holiday if all of your clothes are suitable for summer, but it is 5°, so make sure you check in advance. It also helps with planning what days to do certain activities or you may find yourself in a theme park on a rainy day like I did.
This may sound cliche, but do you know how many people go on holiday and don’t find one second to chill. They end up coming back more tired and stressed than before. So many of us deal with stress and sometimes a small holiday is just what we need. As the main focus of this blog is our mental health, don’t be afraid to have some moments where you just chill, rest and relax during your holiday. Plan activities on some of the days, but remember to have days to relax.
6) Sort out transport
One of the most annoying and stressful things when on holiday is not knowing how you will get around. Hire a car, use Uber or even public transport. This way you will save yourself some coins. Did you also know that certain airlines to Europe e.g. Ryanair provide airport transfers to your hotel (for less than £15 to and fro) which can save you a £40 taxi fair. Look into it!
I hope that this blog post has helped someone, especially those who love to travel. We all have our different ways of taking a break mentally. Whatever it is you may enjoy doing to deal with stress, as we have celebrated mental health awareness week, remember to always take time out to rest & be healthy mentally. Speak to someone, do things you enjoy, eliminate stress & exercise.
